Organization Breakdown Structure OBS

Organizational Breakdown Structure is used in the project management to map the Work Breakdown Structure for the company organization structure. The OBS is a project organization framework for the identification of accountability, responsibility, management, and approvals of all authorized work scope.
The Organization Breakdown Structure reflects the way the project is functionally organized. It is a direct representation and description of the hierarchy and organizations that will provide resources to the plan and perform work identified in the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS).
The OBS is depicted on the Responsibility Assignment Matrix RAM, where it is used to identify the organization responsible for every element of the WBS and Scope of Work (SOW).
The modern firm uses a matrix organizational structure where there is a unit manager, usually the professional supervisor that is responsible for a specific knowledge domain called: Development Unit (DU). The Business Unit (BU) director is the project leader of all aspects regarding the customer and the business sides of the project. This structure is used mainly in large firms to better utilize recourses. The tools enable to plan, utilize effectively, and display the load on every DU in the projects running in the firm in parallel to using Portfolio Recourse Allocation Matrix (PRAM).
Remember! Not all managers will be thrilled to cooperate with somebody who comes to set their territory and responsibility areas. It is recommended setting what is needed by the project and let somebody else, gather the existing situation. Once the project plan has been completed, one can show the organization map gap analysis and let the management decide what and how to handle this.
