Work Breakdown Structure

Building a Dynamic Work Breakdowns Structure

Input
A complete Product Breakdown Structure with Module, Interface, and cost evaluation as well as required infrastructure and inputs to start the Work Package.
Cost estimation for each Work Package
More in-depth knowledge of every Work Package engineering aspects

Process
Phase A
Stage Breakdown Structure SBS
Before you try to define the stages of the project development, review, documentation, and risk management process, it is recommended to survey how other firms develop their products. Usually, the main processes are the same but there are small differences concerning tests, integration, quality assurance process that might boost your produce results.
The stages should be very simple on the upper level but should be very specific on what is needed. If you state that you need the developers to be involved in the design stage, then it should appear in the Stage Breakdown Structure package dictionary.
Phase B
Organization Breakdown Structure OBS
To know what you need and what exists in the firm, you need to set the Organization chart. It is good practice for the following reasons:
> Building a communication map (internal and worldwide)
> Map the firm knowledge base with strength and weakness picture. Each Organization Package Dictionary will elaborate on what exists and what is missing and what are the maturity and capabilities of each team. To get a competitive edge it is recommended to add more details like creativity, satisfaction from work, the contribution of the project to the team/employee, and so on.
> Management hierarchy map
> Roles and responsibilities map

The leaves of the Organization Breakdown Structure will be used for the owners of the work packages later on.
Phase C
Dynamic Work Breakdown Structure DWBS
The creation of the Work Breakdown Structure using FAST InPrO methodology is basically transforming: PBS + OBS => DWBS.

We use the Stage Breakdown Structure as the top level of the Dynamic Work Breakdown Structure.
For each stage, we examine the Product Breakdown Structure and check if we need to do some work on this specific Product Package at all the Stages. For instance, a Product Package can appear in the design, development, unit tests, and integration stages. One should check to which level it is required to specify the chart and which attributes to add.
This process should be directed by the project manager, but performed by the developing teams as in-depth engineering knowledge is required.
You can attach each Work Package with the responsible team from the Organization Breakdown Structure.

The overall Dynamic Work Breakdown Structure may contain many packages and we can review and decide later on which to leave.

Phase D
Resources Allocation Matrix RAM
Building the RAM is easy as the upper layer of the DWBS is the project stages. You can get an immediate Ram chart display using our methods.

Output
A complete Work Breakdown Structure
Resources load forecast.
