At this stage, the engineering has to get a close look at their competitors and learn the engineering aspects of the product. A high-level chart of the main Product Breakdown Structure (PBS) is put on a whiteboard and everybody should review the proposed engineering solution to see if it works and provides what is defined in the System Requirements Specifications document.
Output
A high-level Product Breakdown Structure with the following characteristics:
No more than eight (8) rectangles.
Show the competitive edge of the product so that the marketing can use it for its purposes.
Each rectangle provides a high level of the product
The chart should correlate with the upper level of the Scope/Statement of the Work
Each Work Package is a different physical location/part Interface (internal/external) dictionary
The calculation required confirming the ability to develop
Risks assessments
